Primate expert Peter Elliot joins a dangerous expedition, along with his Gorilla Amy (who is able to communicate using sign-language) into the Congo in search of the lost city Zinj - as well as the city’s ancient diamonds. The expedition is led by Karen Ross of Earth Resources Technology Services (ERTS) and mercenary Charles Munro. The team; who are heavily packed with hi-tech machinery and computers, learn of the mysterious deaths of the previous ERTS expedition transmitted via video satellite which shows an unusual race of grey-haired gorillas who appear to be the culprits. 

Michael Crichton engages his readers with this fast-paced science fiction and paints a richly detailed experience of jungle survival in Africa’s Congo against gorilla-chimpanzee-human hybrid creatures. The compelling novel was adapted on screen in 1995 with the same title.

This compact but action-packed techno-thriller is ambitious with its ancient enigmas, diamond mines, primate connection as well as killer gorillas. However, Crichton keeps the plot interesting on every page.
