Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence is a moving autobiographical story that deals with racism, colonisation and loss of culture. It follows three young Indigenous Australian girls as they journey the 1,600km walk home using a rabbit proof fence as their guide.
Molly (Pilkington’s mother), Gracie and Daisy have been forcibly removed from their family for being multiracial and taken to a cruel settlement school meant to assimilate the girls into white society. Making a courageous escape the girls run away and hope to return to their loving family. What follows is a month long journey of survival as they battle the harsh Australian outback and some of its inhabitants – who prove to be even harsher.
Pilkington's honest and richly detailed writing allows the characters voices and Australian setting to jump off the page, as the reader takes this journey with the protagonists. This poignant true story is truly a tale of survival against all odds.
