Title: The Terror

Author: Dan Simmons

Publisher: [Toronto, Ontario] : Little, Brown and Company, 2007

The Terror tells a fictionalised tale of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Arctic; in 1845–1848, in search of the Northwest Passage. To survive their expedition, Captain Franklin and his crew not only have to battle the wild seas and the cruel elements - there’s also something that seems to be stalking and preying on the stranded sailors.

Author Dan Simmons uses multiple perspectives to tell his character-driven story and to transport the reader to this freezing, isolated and terrifying setting.

With their ship unable to sail and their food supply quickly disappearing, their hope of rescue fades - forcing the sailors to find ways to survive this menacing environment. Simmons writes sympathetic and authentic characters which draws the reader to root for them as they band together to face increasing challenges.

Adapted into a 2018 television series, The Terror is an atmospheric horror/fantasy historical fiction with a pace that continues to intensify right up until its conclusion.
